Lawprof Bans Laptops in Class

The story is here, via Instapundit.  Here is the professor’s reasoning:

“My main concern was they were focusing on trying to transcribe every word that was I saying, rather than thinking and analyzing,” Entman said Monday. “The computers interfere with making eye contact. You’ve got this picket fence between you and the students.”

I don’t understand.  If profs think students are writing too much, isn’t the answer just to explain why and let them decide how to respond?  Further, I would think that whether students make eye contact is up to them.

UPDATE:  As occasionally happens, it looks like the AP story may have misrepresented the facts in some important ways.  I hope to have more accurate details soon.
